Anytime folks talk about PIXAR, the question that inevitably arises is ... "how the heck do they do it?" How do they create "magic" every -- single -- time? For a glimmer of insight, we might look to their meticulous planning and plotting. Check out PIXAR artist Lou Romano's "color script", which beautifully illustrates the story arc and emotions of "Up" in simple, wonderful static renderings. We start out with black and white newsreel footage (to establish the time frame) ... then we go to the vibrant, hope-filled color of love, and a life shared ... then to the bleak monochrome of a life alone ... and finally, to the joyous color of adventure, discovery and rebirth.
This gives us some real insight into the ambition of a shop like PIXAR. They're not just going to take you from point A.to point B. (An old guys house to an exotic South American Jungle). They're going to take you on an emotional voyage. And one of the tools they employ to create this immersive experience, is the color spectrum. Good stuff.
