American Apparel pushes the boundaries — of my pants. All kidding aside, their ad campaigns are overtly sexual, bordering on pornographic, and they've taken a lot of heat in the media for their use of suggestive photos of what appear to be underage girls. So how do they get around that PR nightmare, you ask? — Drawering. Their new campaign replaces photos with charcoal drawings of semi-nude young girls. The ads have very little to do with the clothing, but they have EVERYTHING to do with the brand. The attitude, typography, drawing style and subject matter are all edgy, cool and anti-establishment. And frankly, the imagery isn't too much racier than the majority of ads you see in the high-end fashion mags. You can view the very NSFW campaign over on Copyranter.
