Distilling an entire film down to a compelling single image or concept is a pretty challenging thing to tackle. An entire specialized design industry has sprung up around movie poster design and they even have their own version of the Oscars called the Key Art Awards. This year I'm hoping the 30 Days of Night Poster Series developed by Ignition Print wins for the horror category. These things were plastered all over New York and every time they rolled out a new design, they pretty much stopped me in my tracks. I think the idea of doing a limited color, multiple poster series was really effective, and the execution was inspired.
Needless to say, it's not always done very well. Case in point, what in the hell is going on with this new poster for Bangkok Dangerous?! At first glance everything appears to be in order, but something is definitely "off". It looks like Nic Cage is reaching into his jacket, presumably for a gun (?) but then his hand (attached to a 10 long foot arm?) is reemerging from his jacket holding an invisible gun? WTF?
J,
Didn't you read the last line on the Nick Cage poster?
"It's all in the execution."
This was obviously the designer fessing up to the fact that he_she just didn't execute this photoshop job in the right way. ; )
